Nate Diaz was born in 1985 on the 16th of April in the town of Stockton in California. He was a student of Tokay High School. When he was just 11 years old, he started training in martial arts with Cesar Gracie who was a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belter along with his elder brother Nick Diaz. From here he learned the basic rudiments of fighting.

Nate Diaz began his professional fighting career in the year 2004 at WEC 12 where he placed a defeat to Alex Gracia by Triangle Choke. Before he was invited to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, his main fighting competition used to be in the World Extreme Cage fighting. He contested at WEC 24 against Hermes Francs who was the then WEC Lightweight Champion in 2006. He lost in the second round by submission. He further went on to compete in “The Ultimate Fighter 5”, a reality TV show for fighters which he went on to win.

He requested for tougher competition after defeating opponents such as Junior Assunção and Alvin Robinson in the year 2008. He was paired with Kurt Pellegrino whom he defeated by submission using the Triangle Choke at the UFC Fight Night 13. In the same year, Josh Neer who was a veteran was defeated by Nate Diaz via split decision at the UFC Fight Night 15, main event.

Diaz made his pay per view debut in this bout. 2010 saw Diaz moving to the Welterweight category after losing to Gray Maynard, due to a controversial split decision that was made by the judges in favour of Maynard. He made his debut in the Welterweight category against Rory Markham. He was victorious against Markham and also against Marcus Davis who was his next opponent in the Welterweight category. At UFC 125 which was held in 2011, Diaz fought with Dong Hyun Kim a South Korean fighter and lost with a unanimous decision made by the judges. Nate Diaz also lost at UFC 129 to Rory McDonald in April 2011. This made him decide to move back to the Lightweight category. On his return to the category, he fought with and defeated Takanori Gomi who was former PRIDE Lightweight Champion in September of the same year earning Submission of the Night honors due to his fine showing.

In the year 2012, Cesar Gracie finally awarded him his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. This happened a month before facing Jim Miller who had never been defeated in his MMA career. He was defeated by Diaz at the end of the second round. On December 8, 2012, Diaz lost his last fight of the year to Benson Henderson. In one of his 2013 bouts, at UFC on Fox 7 against former Strikeforce Champion Josh Thompson, his brother Nick Diaz had to physically throw in a towel into the Octagon to signify to the referee to end the match as Thompson was getting the better of him. Diaz, therefore, lost the match by a TKO.

In the month of May 2014, Diaz along with fellow fighter TJ Grant was taken off the Lightweight category rankings of the UFC as they were seen as being inactive by the UFC. After a year off, he came back in December of 2014 to face Rafael Don Anjos in about which he lost. He had just one fight in 2015 against Michael Johnson as an earlier planned match against Matt Brown was canceled. He ended up victorious by a unanimous decision made by the judges.

In 2016, Rafael Don Anjos was billed to fight Conor McGregor but couldn’t make it due to injury. Nate Diaz was called upon to replace him with a limited time of just 11 days. Diaz turned out impressive though, as he won the bout by submission in the second round. This took his winning by submission tally to 9 in the UFC. This made him joint second-most-winning by submission with just Royce Gracie ahead of him. A rematch slated for July in 2016 was postponed to August 2016. Conor McGregor emerged victorious in the rematch by a majority decision of the judges.
