Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is a Kenyan politician and the current president of Kenya. Kenyatta was born on the 26th of October 1961 and has been in office as Kenyan’s president since 2013.
Kenyatta’s family are legacy politicians who have been at the top echelon of Kenyan’s ruling class for over half a century. His father, Jomo Kenyatta, was first a minister in 1963 and then ascended to the presidency as Kenyan’s first president in 1964.

Uhuru Kenyatta was the son of Jomo Kenyatta’s fourth wife, Mama Ngina Kenyatta (née Muhoho). He has three siblings and the second born in the family after his elder sister Christine wwho was born in 1951. Kenyatta’s other siblings were a sister, Anna Nyokabi, and a brother, Muhoho Kenyatta.
The Kenyattas hailed from the Kikuyu sub-ethnic group within the more popular Bantu ethnic clime. Kenyatta has been famed for his first name, “Uhuru” which is the Swahili term for “freedom”. The name was a symbolic representation of the anticipated independence of Kenya from the British colonials.

In 2001, Kenyatta was nominated to the Kenyan Parliament after which he was sworn into office under President Daniel Arap Moi as the Minister for Local Government.
In 2002, Kenyatta ran for president but lost to Mwai Kibaki. In 2008 and as part of the new coalition government, he was reappointed Minister of Local Government and became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade.
Between 2009 – 2012, Kenyatta was Minister of Finance while still retaining his seat as Prime Minister. In 2013, He won the presidential election to become Kenya’s fourth elected president. Kenyatta was his re-election bid in 2017 for a second and final term as president.

In much of his political adventure after the 2007 elections, Kenyatta has been labeled as an accomplice to the murder of several Kenyans following the election in 2007 election between Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga when he was a Minister and a prominent member of President Kibaki’s trusted allies and supporter.
According to the accusations brought upon him by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Kenyatta was accused of planning and funding post-election violence in Naivasha and Nakuru in Kenya through his ties with Mungiki, a violent politico-religious group whose activities had long been banned by the government.
After appearing several times at The Hague, on the 13th of March 2015, all charges against Kenyatta were dropped. In all, about over 1,300 Kenyans allegedly died in the violence.

In 2011 Kenyatta was listed amongst the wealthiest individuals in Kenya having a significant stake in Brookside Dairy Limited, one of Africa’s largest dairy processing companies. He allegedly also owns NCBA Bank in Kenya, whose full name is NCBA Bank Kenya Plc, and is a commercial bank in Kenya.
Kenyatta’s name was mentioned in the Pandora Papers leak in October 2021 where over $30m in stocks and bonds were linked to him. Kenyatta is reported to be worth over $200million.
